Resetting the Gauge
This is a wonderfully simple exercise for releasing strong unwanted feelings or energies. I came across this lovely process several years ago. “GaugeWork” was developed in 2001 by Lifeworks therapist, Astra Johnson.
Try the following:
The process is deceptively simple. Imagine that inside of you is a large gauge that looks something like a speedometer, with a needle that moves through a semi-circle of numbers from zero on the left to 100 on the right.
Close your eyes. Tune in to the unwanted feeling or energy of the particular challenge or situation you seemingly have at the moment. See the gauge and notice where the needle is, the number representing the intensity of feeling or energy.
Now see yourself reaching up with your hand, firmly touching the needle, and moving it slowly and deliberately down the gauge back toward zero.
Let go, take a full breath, and notice how you feel. The key here is making the gauge “real” and moving the needle “deliberately”.
Try it on everything. Let me know what you experience.
