Thought Catchers
by: Judith Poole, Director of Pooled Resources
What makes for Obsessive
Thinking? When access to emotions is blocked, we avoid feelings
in a
number of ways. Obsessive thinking is a way to avoid the feelings
behind the thoughts. From this perspective, every thought can
be found to have an emotion behind it. (We can also work from
the opposite premise, finding beliefs that drive our emotions.)
Sometimes feelings are caught as they move through the environment.
When they come into our energy field, they can spark thoughts
that resonate with their frequency.
This
technique moves the emotional energy without concern for its
cause. It is thus working from an energetic rather than an
analytical framework.
Thought
Catcher.
Write
down the thought or thoughts on the top of your head. You need
not labor over this, simply listen in and record the first
thoughts as they flicker through your mind. They need not be
big deep thoughts. If your mind is a blank, you can use something
mundane, like “I have to do the laundry.” Or just look around
the room for the first thing you notice.
Next,
repeat the first thought you have recorded. Drop your attention
down into your torso as you silently repeat that thought. Notice
where your attention lands. Focus on sensation, and on keeping
your attention planted firmly within. See if you can identify
the emotion behind the thought. If you “have to do the laundry” do
you feel put upon, stressed, bored, elated, apathetic? Is there
grief, fear, lust, anger, or pride present? If the emotion
is too elusive to identify, focus on physical sensation. Do
you feel tension, heaviness, movement, nervousness, fatigue?
Keep your attention on the emotion or the sensation. Follow
it with your attention if it moves to another location.
Your
job is to bring 100% of your focus to this process. Notice
if it drifts, and keep drawing more of your conscious attention
inward. If other thoughts arise, redirect your mind to notice
these sensations.
After
a bit, the sensation you feel will intensify. Then it will
begin to expand, and eventually it will dissipate. If this
does not happening, you can initiate the release by asking
yourself three questions as you hold your internal focus:
1. Could I let this go? (Do not think
about the answer. Just say an emphatic “YES”.)
2. Would I let this go? (Again, don’t
think about it. Just say “YES.”)
3. When would I let it go? (Answer “NOW.”)
You might find yourself yawning, laughing, sighing, belching,
or you might just notice very subtle tingling sensations or
heat or a wave of coolness. All these are signs that the energy
is moving.
Repeat the process until it feels like the thought is hollow,
empty of energy. Go on to the next one.
Thought Catchers help connect mind and body. Every thought
vibrates at a specific frequency. Joy has a higher vibration
than apathy, grief, fear, lust, anger, or pride. By facilitating
the release of repressed emotional energy, this process lifts
one to a higher state of consciousness. The process helps get
you out of a thinking loop, quieting the mind. The more
you practice, the more easily your energy will respond. It
can feel like an exhilarating elevator ride as you get in the
habit of letting go of the heavier repressed energies.
This same method can be applied to physical pain. Just bring
100% of your attention to the pain, and repeat the three questions.
